HINTS AND TIPS - Applying for our Early Careers Programmes

Whichever opportunity you're applying for, there are some things that you should be thinking about, so we've put together some hints and tips for you.

Your CV and cover letter will be one of our first impressions of you – so make it a good one.

  • Create a standout CV, and think of ways to highlight your skills and abilities
  • Include information your contact details, relevant work experience, educational background, qualifications, other skills and interests
  • Ask another person to review your CV and application – a second pair of eyes might pick up any spelling or grammatical errors you may have missed
  • Make sure the details on your CV and application are correct and true
  • If you include a cover letter, then make sure it’s addressed correctly. You don’t need to name a specific person, but it’s important to tailor it to the role you’re applying for
  • Don’t worry if you don’t have much work experience; think about how you might have demonstrated relevant skills at school, college or through your hobbies.

Whether your interview is in person or virtual, there are some things you can do to make a great impression.

  • Preparation is key: research the company and the job you’re applying for. Start with our company and careers websites – there’s lots of information about our operations, culture and values.
  • Make sure to read the job description sent to you ahead of your interview. You won’t be expected to know everything about our organisation however, if you can talk about some of our work, or the challenges facing our industry, it demonstrates that you’re interested in working with us. Showing passion and enthusiasm for what we do will help.
  • Always dress formally, even if you’re completing the interview process online.
  • If your interview is virtual, try and look at your camera when answering – this gives the impression that you’re looking the interviewer in the eye. Find a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted so you can concentrate on the questions asked to you. If you experience any technical difficulties, please let your interviewer know, and we’ll help you find a solution.
  • If your interview is in person, maintain eye contact, good posture, and body language.
  • If it helps, bring a notepad and notes into the interview as you may want to refer to them.
  • If you’re travelling to one of our sites or offices, leave plenty of time for delays on the road or public transport and make sure you bring all the documents we’ve requested.
  • Your invitation email will outline what will be involved in the interview – please ask questions if you’re unsure about anything; we’re here to help.
  • Remember – this is your opportunity to make sure we’re the right fit for you too. Come armed with any questions you may have about the business or team.
  • If you require an adjustment regarding a disability, please let us know how we can accommodate you.
